I live in Volgograd. It so happens that our city has a bridge across the Volga River, and 14 years ago I lived literally 10 meters from it. The windows of my house overlooked the bridge.
On May 20, 2010, from 5:47 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the bridge decided to start swaying vertically. Cars driving across the bridge bounced, and police officers and onlookers stared in amazement. And I was asleep.
In the morning, I learned about this remarkable event from Japan. A friend wrote to me, asking enthusiastically if I had managed to see what was happening from my window.
As it turned out later, the bridge was made to dance by the formation of the Karman vortex street (whatever that means), but what made me go to bed at 5 p.m. on May 20, 2010, is still unknown to science.
